why are the dreamcast and xbox controllers so similar?

check this out

the analoag stick and the d pad are in the same position on both controllers, and the x,y,b,a buttons are in the same order. xbox
also has the same color buttons blue, yellow, red, and green

they both have 2 memorycard slots on the controller and they both have the same type of L and R triggers.

so.... did microsoft buy the dreamcast after it had ben discontinued, or did they steel the designs?

I'm not too terribly sure of the details myself, but if I recall correctly, when the Dreamcast started going under and Sega didn't have enough money to support it, Microsoft's Phil Harrison took over the helm. He tried his best, and for a while was able to keep Sega's system afloat, but it just wasn't enough and as such, the Dreamcast had to be put down [as far as games from first party go]. It was only natural for Sega to port it's games over to Microsoft due to Harrison's attempt to save them.

Eventually though, Nintendo was quick to snatch Sonic and for their exploits got SA:DX and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. as exclusive. Sonic Mega Collection was time exclusive, but in order to make it up to Sony, gave them more games [but more dodgy music issues.] Sonic Gems was also Gamecube exclusive for a while [Gems was eventually released for the PS2, but only in Japan and Europe.]

It seems that Sega was impressed with sales for their Nintendo titles that they created a whole new game for the Nintendo Wii, Sonic and the Secret Rings, as opposed to porting over Sonic Next like they did for the 360 and PS3. The game was MUCH more fun, and had that old school Sonic feel to it.

Sega then did the unthinkable. Decided to do a collaboration with Nintendo for Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. Some see this as some unofficial confirmation that Sonic is going to be in Brawl [he was one of the most requested to Sakurai] and I'd love to see him there, but we'll have to see.
